• The bacterial filtration index (BFE) which measures the degree of protection against contamination from other people ( incoming ) and towards other people ( outgoing ). In fact, some devices protect only the wearer, or vice versa only others.
• Water repellency : the Covid-19 virus spreads through respiratory and salivary secretions in the form of droplets, the so-called droplets . For this reason, it can only be stopped by a device made of water-repellent material capable of creating a barrier to the passage of these droplets (in and out).

To determine the level of protection of a mask, it is therefore essential to take into consideration both the bacterial filtration index (BFE) and the water repellency of the fabric used.

If we use these two criteria to evaluate the class I surgical mask , we discover that it has a bacterial filtration index of 95% on the exit , and only 20% on the entry .

Since the incoming BFE is very low, if a single infected person does not wear protection, he or she can infect those around him or her, even if the latter is wearing a surgical mask. Furthermore, since the surgical mask is not made of water-repellent material, it loses its filtration capacity after 4 hours of use.
